Salesforce began rolling out an email-first login experience to production orgs on October 5, 2026, changing the default prompt on Salesforce standard login pages from a username to an email address. The production rollout is gradual, so orgs will not all change at the same time. (help.salesforce.com)
Salesforce Changes the Default Login Prompt
The change applies to the UI at `login.salesforce.com` and `test.salesforce.com`. Users can still select Login with Username when their Salesforce username differs from their monitored email address. Registered passkeys continue to work with both login methods. Custom My Domain login pages and Experience Cloud login pages are not included in this rollout. (help.salesforce.com)
The main operational risk is with users tied to shared, unmonitored, or inactive email accounts. Salesforce usernames must use an email-style format, but they do not have to be real mailboxes. The new default relies on access to the email address associated with the user record, which makes those accounts worth reviewing before production users encounter the new prompt.
Automated UI Tests Need a Login Flow Review
Salesforce warns that automated tests using the standard login pages can be affected. A test that enters a username into the first field may fail when the page initially requests an email address. Teams can update the test to select Login with Username, or use the direct username-login parameter documented in the Salesforce login change instructions, such as `?login=1` on the login URL. The rollout changes the default interactive login path, not the Salesforce username itself. Administrators should therefore focus their review on user communications, service accounts with unusual email configurations, browser automation, and any test harness that assumes the username field is displayed first.
