HubSpot Will Add California Sales Tax To Subscriptions, Seats, And Credits In 2027
HubSpot disclosed on October 27, 2026 that it will prepare to collect California sales tax on taxable subscriptions, seats, and credits beginning January 1, 2027. The change affects customers sourced to California and follows the state’s expansion of sales tax to certain remotely accessed software and SaaS under California’s digital products tax notice.
HubSpot’s California SaaS sales tax FAQ says its billing and tax systems will apply the tax to taxable transactions. The applicable amount will be calculated from the customer’s California sourcing location and displayed as a separate line on the invoice. HubSpot determines the account location from the shipping address configured under Account & Billing.
Billing and exemption requirements
The tax treatment is based on the proposed California Department of Tax and Fee Administration regulations, which are not final. Under the current proposal, payments for subscription periods beginning on or after January 1, 2027, can be taxable even when the underlying contract was signed in 2026.
HubSpot says onboarding, consulting, training, and other professional services are not subject to the new tax. Customers with valid exemptions must submit supporting documentation to billing@hubspot.com. Organizations whose California billing address differs from where users access HubSpot can also request review for a multiple points of use exemption. HubSpot does not apportion the tax automatically.
