Mcp, or Model Context Protocol, is an open standard originally developed by Anthropic for connecting AI applications with external tools, data sources, and business systems.
An MCP server provides approved capabilities to an AI client through the protocol. It can expose tools, resources, and actions so a model can retrieve information or perform supported operations through a consistent interface.
Mcp is commonly used in AI agent workflows involving CRM platforms, APIs, databases, files, and automation services. Authentication, permissions, and access controls determine which capabilities a client can use.
Related terms include MCP client, MCP server, AI agent, tool calling, resources, prompts, and API integration. MCP complements APIs by helping AI systems discover and use connected capabilities.
